Doctor Honored for Saving Passengers During In-Flight Medical Emergencies
According to The Chosun Ilbo (February 27, 2024), Dr. Sung Soo-hwan, a physician working at a hospital in Busan, has responded to five in-flight medical emergencies since 2015 after being called through the "Doctor Call" announcement.
His most recent case occurred on a flight from Incheon to Toronto, where a woman in her 20s suddenly developed severe leg pain. Dr. Sung suspected a life-threatening blood clot (deep vein thrombosis) that could travel to the lungs or heart, and strongly recommended an emergency landing. The aircraft diverted to Anchorage, Alaska, allowing the patient to receive urgent medical treatment.
Despite concerns that doctors may face legal risks when treating patients outside the hospital, Dr. Sung said he always responds because saving a patient's life comes first. He emphasized that many physicians continue to volunteer their expertise in emergencies out of professional responsibility.
In recognition of his dedication, Dr. Sung has been praised for demonstrating exceptional medical judgment, professionalism, and compassion by providing emergency care whenever needed—even thousands of meters above the ground.
